Maxi fines to pet shops: dogs, cats and rabbits displayed in the window and sold without authorization

Rain of sanctions in 30 pet shops in Rome and its province, without sales authorizations and exhibiting animals in the shop window

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

The operation has just been completed “Pet Shop” with 140 thousand euros in fines imposed on the owners of pet shops. In the sights of the zoophile guards of the'OIPA (International organization for the protection of animals) in Rome, about 30 pet shops in the capital and in the province have ended up selling pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and birds.

Several violations were found: in many cases the animals came displayed in the shop window as if it were a commodity (a practice prohibited in many municipalities for several years), others lacked the necessary authorizations or the medical directors of the activities.

It took about 10 months to ascertain the various offenses and regarding the sale of animals, an activity permitted by law but regulated by regional legislation and municipal regulations. The investigation of the OIPA turns the spotlight on what happens in pet shops, where too much the well-being of dogs, cats and other specimens is not protected at all, indeed. But the investigations of the OIPA zoophile guards are not over.

The checks will continue in a planned and constant manner - explains Claudio Locuratolo, coordinator of the zoophile guards of the Oipa in Rome and the province - Even if the sale of pets is allowed, the laws for the protection of animals must be respected by traders. We ask the local health authorities to monitor more carefully: we have found a large number of violations and this is an indication of insufficient controls.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the protection of animals, there are never too many checks ... In this regard, we will never stop repeating it: avoid buying animals in shops, adopted!
