Mathematical mind: characteristics and how to develop it (according to Maria Montessori)

Not all children love mathematics, sometimes because it is complicated other times because it is proposed as a very boring subject and not very relevant to reality. Yet there are many creative ways to introduce children to mathematics. Parents and teachers, for example, can be inspired by the Montessori method.

Not all children love the mathematics, sometimes because it is complicated other times because it is proposed as a very boring subject and not very relevant to reality. Yet there are many creative ways to introduce children to mathematics. Parents and teachers, for example, can be inspired by the Montessori method and creative games to develop the mind math.

Here, then, children will be able to more easily develop the mathematical mind and logical ability thanks to games, practical and fun activities and the possibility of understanding how mathematics can be. useful in daily life.

Maria Montessori has fine-tuned specific methods and materials to help children learn math, count and add and subtract, divide and multiply. The Montessori method is always very practical and linked to daily life also as regards the learning of mathematics.

The mathematical mind

The development of the mathematical mind requires the learning of arithmetic, geometry and algebra during the school years attended by children. Knowing and understanding math means align with the technological evolution that is part of our era.

The Montessori curriculum related to mathematics aims to develop:

  • A basic knowledge of the concepts and language of mathematics.
  • Safety and accuracy in the use of mathematics in practical situations.
  • Positive attitude towards learning mathematics.
  • Discovery of new concepts regarding numbers, space and units of measurement.
  • Use of specific materials for concrete learning of mathematics.

Have you ever thought about explaining to your children how important it is know the equivalences, proportions and fractions when do you prepare a cake? Here are some simple examples where you can apply math in everyday life together with your children.

Mathematics tables

According to the Montessori method, to help children approach the world of mathematics in a concrete way, it is very useful to create and use special tables to learn multiplications and divisions, addition and subtraction.

Mathematics in the kitchen

If we prepare a cake or others recipes together with our children we can have fun creating equivalences, for example by exploiting grams and kilograms, liters and milliliters in combination with the ingredients that we will have to use for cooking or for mixing.

Mathematics for shopping

One of the times children can learn math is when we take them with us to go shopping. Children based on their age and ability with mathematics can calculate for example how much the discount on a product is and how much the discounted product will cost, they can calculate the final price of the shopping before arriving at the checkout or make at least an estimate and they can try to determine the unit price of single portions sold in a single package. They can also help you compare the prices of branded products versus products with the supermarket name. What is the higher price and which the lower? With the advantage that while you shop, the children will be engaged in the game of mathematics and will not be bored.

Mathematical games

You can choose Montessori materials or gods educational games to help children learn math while having fun. Math games also help with attention, concentration and self-control. There are also famous ones board games or card games that if used at their best they teach children to count, to add and subtract but also to divide, for example when it comes to distributing the same number of cards for each participant of the game. Without forgetting the chess, which teach patience, creative thinking, how to divide a problem into many small parts to be solved one after the other and how to plan the next steps in advance.

Lego and constructions

Remember abacus, abacus and rulers? If they seem a bit old-fashioned tools to you and you don't have them at your disposal, try to introduce children to mathematics in a fun way thanks to constructions, as did a teacher who decided to use Lego to teach mathematics to young pupils. For example, legos are very useful for learning fractions.

Mathematics in the home economics

Finally, you can involve the children in small household accounts or in the management of theirs pocket money when they are older. In this way they will be able to familiarize themselves while having fun with the concepts of expenditure, income and earnings typical of math problems that must be solved at school.

Have you found a fun way to help your children learn math?
