Massive and frequent exposure to cleaning and detergent products would cause genetic changes in women of childbearing age that can (negatively) affect the health of their children

A new study by the Norwegian University of Bergen, conducted by matching data from previous studies, raises concerns about side effects of products for cleaning and disinfecting environments commonly used in our homes - which could also be passed on to the next generation, never directly in contact with such products. This is because of a mutation of the mothers' genes which can be transmitted to children, even years after the use of detergents. According to the researchers, childhood asthma is more likely and frequent in children whose mothers have frequently used hygiene products (working, for example, in the cleaning industry). not only during pregnancy, but also before conception. These findings could throw disturbing light on the excessive use of disinfectants and cleaners during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Many women, future mothers, have been exposed to the harmful effects of chemical detergents at home or at work, but so far these effects have not been properly investigated - explains the author of the study. Cecilie Svanes. - This study suggests how much exposure of parents to chemicals, even before the conception of a child, can affect the health of future generations. That is why further studies are needed, considering the potential health implications for many women of childbearing age who use cleansing products, as well as that of their babies.

The authors observed 3318 mother / child pairs - the former participated in a study conducted by RHINE, the latter in a survey by RHINESSA. The children provided information on various aspects of their childhood health, while the mothers explained what their job was like in their youth - with a focus on jobs that involved exposure to cleaning products such as cleaning ladies, nurses, caregivers, cooks, etc. It was found that if mothers began exposure to such products years before the child's conception, the child manifested 71% more asthma and / or breathing difficulties. On the other hand, if the mother's exposure began after the birth of the child, no major risk was found.

These results demonstrate what cleaning agents and disinfectants can induce changes in mothers that are also passed on to their children, affecting their health. The mechanisms behind these changes, however, are still unclear: for example, it is unclear why many women who stopped exposure to chemicals many years before the conception of a child still exposed the child to a higher risk. of asthma and breathing problems - the researchers speculate, the changes likely affect the state of a woman's egg cells.
