Massacre of stray dogs in Pakistan: over 25 thousand animals will be killed in the next two months

In Pakistan a real massacre of stray dogs is underway with the aim of containing them. In two months, 35 dogs will be killed

The Government of Pakistan is preparing to carry out a real massacre of stray dogs, a massacre which unfortunately is already underway. In total, at least 25 thousand animals will be killed within the next two months.

This was announced by Oipa, the International Animal Protection Organization, which made it known that the killings of strays have already begun in the administrations of Lodhran, Kehror Pakka and Dunyapur but will soon extend to many other cities in Pakistan.

The images released by Oipa are really strong, if you are particularly sensitive, move on.

Oipa International took action to try to stop the massacre by writing to the Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan:

“Stop this mass killing. There are bloodless, ethical methods to contain the number of strays and the spread of diseases "

In short, an ethical approach to the problem is called for, in order to replace the atrocious practice of killing stray dogs with a program of capture, sterilization, vaccination and release on the territory. Activities that, albeit in very small numbers as far as possible, are already carried out by the volunteers present in the area.

The problem is that such stray containment practices are hardly new to Pakistan. According to Oipa itself, over 50 dogs are killed every year on the advice of the Government.

A massacre, among other things, very cruel considering that dogs are killed with firearms or, in the worst cases, poisoned, therefore they die in excruciating suffering. The lifeless bodies that can be seen in the terrible images released by the Oipa are then piled up and disposed of by municipal operators.

As explained by Valentina Bagnato, head of international relations at Oipa International, there is also another problem to face, that of the population who is afraid of dogs as carriers of diseases, in particular of rabies for which strays are obviously not vaccinated.

The strategy of sterilizations and vaccinations could therefore be the winning one to reduce the number of dogs in the area but also to avoid the spread of diseases:

"This would also ensure the safety and protection of local communities" said Valentina Bagnato.

What can we do to stop the massacre

Oipa asks to copy the text of the appeal to the prime minister (you can find it here) and to send it to the emails spm@pmo.gov.pk and info@pmo.gov.pk.

A sort of mailbombing, therefore, to try to stop the massacre of strays.
