Massacre of fish and marine animals off the Spanish coast, where thousands of animals have died due to toxic spills from the countryside. Environmental associations are calling for urgent intervention from the government

along the Mar Menor, on the south-east coast of Spain, a real environmental disaster is taking place, which is putting the fishing sector in the area in crisis: for days now we have been witnessing helplessly the death of thousands of fish and crustaceans. The causes of this death are not yet clear, but local authorities point the finger at the toxic discharges of industrial agriculture: these would have caused a lack of oxygen in the water (a phenomenon known as anoxia) which would have led to the suffocation of the animals. marine.

It is not the first time that such a massacre has occurred: already in 2019 hundreds of marine animals had died from the pollution of their ecosystem due to the intensive agriculture processes practiced in the area. Now, however, the situation is even more serious: 4,5 tons of dead animals have already been collected, according to estimates by the environmental association. Naturalists Association of Southeast.

Precisely this association, in concert with the WWF urgently asks the local authorities for emergency work to stop the discharge of polluting waters and the construction of a 'green filter' to stop contamination of the lagoon. After these 'first aid' interventions, the associations also ask for interventions to improve the sewerage networks, to reclaim the soil and to prevent landslides and landslides in the event of floods.

Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, personally visited the disaster-stricken area and promised swift action to restore the area to a healthy condition. The minister had already visited the area in October last year, and his commitment had turned into a fact-finding investigation into the illegal irrigation of Campo de Cartagena. According to estimates, in fact, in 2018 there were 10.000 hectares irrigated with illegal and highly polluting systems. The dismantling of these systems has begun but continues slowly and in fits and starts due to the lack of national coordination.

The measures announced by the Government of the Region of Murcia during the environmental crisis arrive late to alleviate the mortality of the fauna, as well as being useless and causing serious impacts environmental factors added to those already suffered by the Mar Menor - denounce the activists. - For this reason, we are calling for a conversion plan for the agricultural activity of Campo de Cartagena which reduces the intensity of this activity, which reduces and controls the use of fertilizers per hectare, reduces the amount of irrigation per farm and promotes the use of green filters on the farm.
