Deer culling in the Province of Ravenna. For a few days he has been discussing the management program for the fallow deer population in the locality close to the Pinewood of Classe, territory of Fosso Ghiaia, where a few decades ago a modest nucleus was "accidentally" settled, which today would have reached the number of over 200 specimens.

Animals have obviously started look for new territories to feed on, going to occupy neighboring naturalistic areas such as Ortazzo and Ortazzino, Pineta Ramazzotti, and other areas of the Po Delta Park, also encroaching on the land of farms and constituting, according to the institution, for an danger to traffic. Their crossing of the Adriatic road would have caused several accidents.

Hence the decision to proceed withculling of 67 specimens, preceded by the favorable opinions of both the Po Delta Park Authority and Ispra. The planned killing will be carried out from November until Saturday 28 February 2015, and they will eventually be suspended on the days in which the Park or other Bodies plan events in the area concerned.

“We learn, from the Province of Ravenna, that the introduction of the fallow deer in the pine forest of Classe (Ravenna), would have occurred" accidentally "about ten years ago. We do not understand how we can introduce wild animals of considerable size, accidentally, in an area like that of the Classe pine forest. In fact, the word used by the provincial administration seems to us to consider the fact as a trivial oversight ”. Thus the Enpa Section of Ravenna on the matter.

The national section, a few days later, increases the dose: given "the lack of interest, insensitivity and indifference of the Province of Ravenna", the national president of Enpa, Carla Rocchi, appeals directly to the Minister of the Environment to ask for its intervention as the "guardian" of that unavailable heritage of the state represented by wildlife.

"The culling of fallow deer has been severely contested by tens of thousands of citizens who have mobilized against what represents a further gift to hunters - declared the national president of Enpa -. The deers of Classe, like all specimens of wild fauna, constitute an unavailable patrimony of the community (law 157/92); a heritage that, nevertheless, is "sold off" to hunters, who will not only be able to kill the animals, but even buy the culled animals ".

There would be many solutions, alternatives to killing, presented to the Province. These include sterilization of the animals and also the extreme one of capturing and moving deer to other areas. And there are even those who, like the billionaire Eleonora Schonwald, say they are willing to take them all in foster care on his estate in Castiglione, fully covering the costs of the capture.

“I am willing to pay the costs. I make available my truck, my staff and I have already contacted three veterinarians from Piacenza, where I have my other estates. Experienced people, who have already done this kind of operation […]. I don't care about the future, I want to avoid the massacre now. You cannot think of killing the fallow deer now, to give a sop to the hunters, and to look for a bloodless solution later ", explains the woman in an interview with Il Resto del Carlino.

But once again hunters will be involved in wildlife management.

“If you really want to to protect nature it is necessary to start from the stop to repopulation, certainly not from the slaughter of animals. An extermination which, as past experience shows, is completely inadequate to resolve situations of presumed overpopulation ”, concludes the association.
