Salmonella in a laying hen farm on a farm near Correggio. This was discovered by the local health authority of the Correggio District Municipalities, which after having ascertained the presence of the salmonella bacterium in the hens' litter, ordered its mass slaughter.

During a routine check carried out by the Public Health Department of the USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, the salmonella bacterium was found in the shed floor.

The eggs were not contaminated. In fact, subsequent laboratory checks revealed the absence of positivity for eggs intended for the production of food products.

But once again they will pay the price hens. The Veterinary Service of the Department of Public Health

"In line with European Community regulations and the National Plan for the control of salmonellosis in poultry, provides sending the garments to the slaughterhouse ".

All the animals on the farm, around 18.000 hens, will be killed.

If negative for salmonella, after slaughter they will be used for the production of cooked food.

"It is useful to remember that heat treatment, both of meat and eggs, cancels the possibility of contamination" assures the Ausl.

This is one of the sad aspects of intensive farming, afterwards these animals are often forced to live crammed in closed environments and where the presence of a pathogen can spread very quickly. On farms, animals are locked up inside a shed, exploited to produce food for humans, transformed into machines.

Their death is therefore not considered from an ethical point of view but from an economic point of view, in terms of losses and not of broken lives.
