Malagrotta landfill: the Ama is also under investigation for the murders caused by pollution

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Malagrotta: also theAMA, the municipal waste company of Rome, and Raffineria Roma Spa, a company controlled by Total Erg, appear in the investigation file on 4 manslaughter caused bypollution of the aquifer below the rubbish dump (finally closed).

In this way, the Rome prosecutor's office brings together in a single file the complaints raised against Francesco Rando, CEO of the Giovi company that manages the landfill. The hypothesized offenses are groundwater poisoning and soil contamination and the preliminary hypothesis of the deputy prosecutor Alberto Galanti is that the pollution of the aquifer may have influenced the health of four people in the Valle Galeria area and who would then have fallen ill with cancer.

The recent appraisal of the Polytechnic of Turin on behalf of the Council of State has ascertained that the groundwater under the landfill area is polluted, but now the Prosecutor wants to clarify whether the responsibility is attributable only to the leachate from waste or even from the incineration of hospital waste and expired drugs carried out by the Ama plant and from polluting emissions from the neighboring refinery. In fact, one would not speak only of tumors: an epidemiological report by the ASL of Rome highlighted an increase in cardiovascular diseases in women and in the respiratory system in men.

On the other hand, already in 2011 the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) had noted that "the area of Malagrotta is the site of many anthropic activities" and that "the main pollutants and sources of origin are different".

In practice, the fault of the pathologies and deaths would not only lie with the leachate but also with a possible co-responsibility for other sources of pollution deriving from the Ama and Refinery plants. We are now only hoping for a reasonable investigation time.
