The groundwater of the Malagrotta landfill is heavily contaminated with metals and pollutants. This is the alarm launched by ISPRA with a dossier of 700 pages after the environmental research carried out in the area surrounding the Rome landfill, already declared exhausted in 2008 by the European Union, but still active and whose closure is continually extended.

The study of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research of the Ministry of the Environment comes a few days after the investigation opened by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office for manslaughter after 4 suspected deaths from tumors among the inhabitants of Malagrotta and integrates the data already published by the ARPA in 2010.

Sulfate, iron, manganese, arsenic, nickel, chromium, aluminum, lead, benzene and other heavy metals have exceeded the permissible limits. This is why the closure of the landfill is more urgent than ever. And for this reason a group of representatives of the Greens demonstrated in front of the Lazio Region and handed the Ispra dossier to the governor Renata Polverini who, according to environmentalists, "remained hidden in some drawer".

"The pollution of Malagrotta is certified by the EU, with which we are working and with the contribution of the prefect we will proceed with its closure" replied Polverini in response to the requests of the Greens: "They do their job, but the The EU has already sanctioned us thanks to the work that has not been done by governments also supported by the Greens ”.

After the announcement of formal notice of Naples by the European Union, therefore the waste problem arises overwhelmingly even in the capital. More than anything else because Malagrotta, according to the latest extension, will close in December, but an alternative site has not yet been found and, therefore, the garbage of the Romans from the beginning of next year will no longer have a place for storage.

The mayor Gianni Alemanno also intervened on the issue, minimizing the issue by stating that there will be no Naples risk.
“We have the Prefect who, as commissioner, is dealing with this matter - said the mayor Gianni Alemanno referring to the closure of Malagrotta - the Lazio Region has indicated the alternative sites, there are no risks. This is the usual alarmism on the part of the left, there's nothing to say. Prefect Pecoraro - he explained - since he took up the post of commissioner, holding a meeting every week with all the political and technical leaders at the regional and municipal level. He is moving with the utmost decision and I am absolutely sure that he will be able to handle the matter. We must hurry to the alternative site and it is a matter of weeks for the indication of the area and the start of the works. So there are no risks "

"The situation in Malagrotta must be carefully monitored - concluded the mayor of Rome - and I remember that we made aordinance to avoid environmental pollution which was then blocked by the Tar. The Arpa data, however, are positive. So there are no particular alarms even from this point of view. Maximum alert but I am convinced that there will be no emergency ".
