Only black Legos to build wonderful works of art: Ekow Nimako, 42, builds a real black Universe

Only black Legos to build wonderful works of art: Ekow Nimako, 42, builds a real black Universe with the most famous bricks in the world. From mythological characters to film scenes up to Ghana in the year 3020. All strictly in black version. Wonderful to watch.

The artist began making Lego sculptures in 2012 and his career took off two years later when he received a scholarship to exhibit his works in Canada during Black History Month.

Nimako uses black Lego bricks for three main reasons: first of all black is one of the most common Lego colors and therefore there are many different pieces available for him to use, moreover it is a color that he particularly likes, but above all in this way. beings he creates are "unmistakably black".

Regardless of their characteristics or what I can do with them, they will be always considered black.

    he tells CNN.

In 2014 the artist created her first human sculpture, 'Flower Girl', with the aim of denouncing the lost innocence of young black girls who have not had the chance to be like traditional florists in the West (the work it was then remodeled several times, until it had the appearance of a 10-year-old girl).

I'm making art - explains the author - This is art. It's not a hobby, it's not a toy, it's not a stupid thing. It doesn't fall into many categories that Lego creations fall into. I began to realize that not only did I enjoy making art with Legos, but it was important that I do black art very specifically.

In the 'Building Black: Civilizations' series, Nimako reinvents the medieval narratives of sub-Saharan Africa. His piece 'Kumbi Saleh 3020 CE', in particular, made up of around 100.000 Lego bricks and currently on display at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, is named after the capital of a medieval Ghanaian kingdom. With this work, the artist explores medieval West Africa and imagines what it would be like in 1000 years.

Nimako is hoping for a inclusive future who recognizes the history of anti-black racism and the role ofAfrofuturism in allowing people to "imagine a better world".

Even Lego itself has recognized the value of Ekow Nimako, to whom it dedicates a space on the site on which it writes:

Ekow Nimako doesn't just build LEGO® structures. Create "monuments to black youth”, Exploring black identity through a surrealist lens

    Really impressive and disruptive.
