In Europe butterflies are in danger. Their habitats are disappearing. In particular, meadow butterflies are found almost only on road edges, in rocky places, in nature reserves in swamps and along railway branches. Now it comes MacaKit, a crowdfunding project to save butterflies.

The trend of the disappearance of the butterflies started before 1990, now the research shows a very serious situation, a dramatic decline in butterflies that triggers a real alarm for the disappearance of their habitats, which are increasingly reduced. A dangerous threat to biodiversity.

The farfalle they are in danger just like bees in their role as pollinators. So then the biologists Pier Paolo Poli and Emanuele Rigato have devised a kit designed to save butterflies, with particular reference to one of the most beautiful European butterflies, the Macaone butterfly.

The creators of the project hope that the gestures of individuals can lead to great changes. The problem of the disappearance of butterfly habitats can only be solved with the collaboration of all citizens, who can work together to change the world and help save butterflies and bring them back to our cities.

Here then is the creation of MacaKit, the first kit in the world for the breeding of the Machaon butterfly (Papilio machaon). MacaKit aims to be a tool capable of sensitizing people of all ages to the issue of biodiversity conservation.

“With this project we want to bring meadow butterflies back not only to rural places, but above all in our cities. The experience does not end with the kit, but continues by learning how to attract them to your garden or balcony through the use of particular essences of nourishing plants and flowers ”- explained the two biologists.

    MacaKit was created for:

    1) Sensitize people through a concrete experience that leaves a mark.

    2) The activity of sensitization already includes an active role in conservation. The user materially adopts and grows two caterpillars up to the butterfly stage which he will then release into the wild.

    3) The kit was meant to be within everyone's reach. The activities are much easier than those required to look after a goldfish. It can be done all year round without seasonality constraints. It does not dirty, it does not stink, it does not take up space, it costs relatively little. You don't need a garden or a balcony, just a window.

    4) He macaone it is an umbrella species, in the sense that all the activities carried out for its conservation inevitably bring benefits even to those species that are more modest in beauty but no less important from an ecological point of view.
