M49 'Papillon' bear was neutered, stuffed with tranquilizers and locked up forever in captivity

Stuffed with tranquilizers, then neutered and forever condemned to captivity. Once again, the unfortunate protagonist is M49, the Papillon bear

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Stuffed with tranquilizers, neutered and forever condemned to captivity. Once again, the unfortunate protagonist is M49, the Papillon bear that we learned to know and love when, after escaping from his enclosure, we feared for his life. The decision taken by the province of Trento infuriated animal rights activists and associations that took to the streets in favor of the well-being of the bear.

In Papillon, captivity had always been close, so awakened from hibernation in July 2019, he had begun his race to freedom. But last April he had been captured by the Trentino Forestry Corps in the mountains above Tione, in the Giudicarie and was brought back to Casteller, south of Trento, in the structure he hated so much. Even Minister Sergio Costa had intervened in defense of the bear, when it was assumed that he would be killed in case of danger. Fortunately, no culling, but no good news either. On the contrary. For poor Papillon today comes yet another violence: the bear has been neutered and stuffed with tranquilizers. This was made known by the provincial councilor Giulia Zanotelli in response to the question made by the provincial councilor of Futura, Paolo Ghezzi.

Captured the M49 bear: Papillon's escape to freedom is over

"This is a practice for animals kept in captivity", explained following the chemical castration operation carried out on the bear, the commissioner Giulia Zanotelli adding that the veterinarian gives the bear supplements containing natural substances (amino acids and vitamins) "which have beneficial and calming effects without altering their behavior and physiology".

On the hypothesis of a transfer of M49, the commissioner affirms that the Province “reaffirms its willingness to allow the transfer of the plantigrade to structures that may prove to be better for hosting it, if the proposals are well documented and technically valid. We note, in any case, that today and as in the past, no concrete feasible proposal has followed ”.

The M49 bear comes out of hibernation and is still in danger: they want to bring it down

The Bear JJ4

Meanwhile, the fate of the JJ4 bear is also uncertain. Wanted because guilty of attacking two men and with a killing order, we all cheer for her.

"Nobody touches JJ4, immediately put down the guns and let reason and science be given the floor", says Lav, which has decided to challenge Fugatti's order, filing an appeal with the TAR of Trento.

"The ordinance in question - says Massimo Vitturi, Lav manager of the wild animals area - is completely lacking from a motivational point of view, does not report any in-depth elements on the event that occurred and is also completely disproportionate, it cannot be killed a bear for an unclear event, after having always remained shy in her environment for fifteen years, without causing damage and without ever meeting a single person ".

And the Oipa also promises battle: “We have an appeal to the TAR ready with which we will also ask for the suspension of the ordinance. We remind you that the killing of a bear can take place, by law, only in the case of proven danger to humans and when the ineffectiveness of non-bloodless alternative measures has occurred ".
