    The name Lykoi comes from the Greek and means wolf cat. According to the breed's official website, they like to hunt around the house for anything they can find. They are extremely cautious of strangers, but they also know how to be faithful, sweet and very friendly to their owners. Their character would make them look more like dogs than cats.

    “There was no human intervention to create the cat. The gene is a natural mutation that has appeared in the domestic cat population. We are simply using genetics from natural processes, ”explains Lycoi breeder Johnny Gobble of Tennessee, one of the first to select the breed.

    It all started when the Gobbles, his wife Brittney and Patti Thomas found the first two kittens with the defect. They thus created a new race, making sure that the specimens were completely healthy before starting with the breeding. Several tests were conducted to rule out genetic diseases, while dermatologists from the University of Tennessee performed tests for skin abnormalities, given the Lykoi's strange coat.

    They found, therefore, that some of the hair follicles in cats do not have all the components necessary to create hair. Even healthy follicles are not always able to maintain it. The Lykoi can therefore become completely naked for some period of time. While the similarity is striking, the DNA test has confirmed that these cats are not Sphynx, the famous hairless cat breed.



    “In the end we found that the cats are healthy and the hair loss is not due to any known disease or ailment. It was established that this was indeed a true natural mutation, and our breeding program has begun, ”continues the farmer, exposing rumors of a huge hoax.
