Luna, the Labrador who found the victims left under the rubble in Ravanusa

Thanks to Luna, a 3-year-old Labrador firefighter, the bodies of 4 other victims who had remained under the rubble since Saturday were extracted in Ravanusa

A Ravanusa, in the Agrigento area, people continue to dig without stopping among the piles of rubble of the buildings that collapsed due to an explosion. In these hours the death toll of the tragic accident, caused by a gas leak in the methane network, has risen to 7 people, while there are still two missing. The undertaking is not at all easy for the Fire Brigade involved in the operation, but luckily with them there is a four-legged angel: Luna, a Labrador six-year-old female - with a honey-colored coat - which is part of theCanine unit of the firefighters of Palermo.

It was Luna who identified the four lifeless bodies that were extracted this morning: that of Selene Pagliarello, the nurse in the ninth month of pregnancy; that of her husband Giuseppe Carmina and her father, Angelo Carmina. The fourth body found thanks to Luna is of Carmela Scibetta, the wife of Professor Pietro Carmina, whose body was recovered yesterday.

This morning at dawn Luna was able to locate the first body immediately, then leading her human colleagues on the trail of the others. In fact, the Labrador has been trained to look for living people and when he does he starts barking continuously. When, in fact, today she had to report the presence of the corpses, Luna did not start barking but she remained still in one place, wagging her tail in an agitated way. Thanks to this signal, the rescue team understood immediately and was able to intervene to extract the bodies.

Luna has been part of the Palermo Fire Brigade unit for three years and will remain in service for another 5 years. Her contribution reminds us how precious dogs are in dramas like the one that rocked the Ravanusa community. Thanks, Luna!
