London can certainly afford it as it boasts an extensive metro network and efficient public transport. From today, those who access the center with their own car, an old model powered by petrol and diesel will be subject to pay a tax of 10 pounds, which added to the previous one already in force since 2003 equal to 11,50 pounds (the so-called Congestion Charge), has the power to discourage those who do not use public transport to get around.

The new tax was introduced in an effort to improve air quality in the British capital, where air quality limits are regularly exceeded.

“Older vehicles entering central London must now meet the minimum emission requirements or pay an extra daily charge, to be added to the Congestion Charge. The T-Charge (officially known as the Emission Supplement) operates in the Congestion Charge area and is part of our commitment to help clean up London's polluted air " it is read on the official website.

Mayor, Sadiq Khan, he explained that he is ready to take urgent measures to help clean up London's polluted air.

“London's shocking public health crisis, with thousands of deaths premature caused by air pollution, must be addressed ", he said.

According to the Mayor, the introduction of the new tax is another important step in encouraging motorists to drop out polluting vehicles.

“London now has the stricter rules in the world with older, more polluting vehicles paying up to £ 21,50 a day to drive into the city center. This is the time to get up and join the battle to eliminate the polluted air we are forced to breathe ”.

The tax will be applied to Pre-Euro 4 vehicles in the area covering all of central London south of King's Cross station, east of Hyde Park, west of London Tower and north of Elephant and Castle.

Pre-Euro 4 vehicles are those registered before 2006, but Transport for London suggests that anyone with a vehicle registered before 2008 checks the emissions level.

Furthermore, by 2020, the city government aims to apply additional rates also to heavy vehicles such as buses, coaches and trucks, while from 2021 the area in which it will not be possible to circulate except with ecological cars will be extended.
