We have already told you several times about traveling libraries, automatic book dispensers, the Bookcrossing and old phone booths turned into free bookcases. Now borrowing books overseas is even easier, so the culture spreads quickly and for free, beyond the web.

In Seattle, for example, there is a Little Free Library on almost every block. The phenomenon began in 2009, in a town of Wisconsin. There, the Little Free Libraries would become so popular as to alert the authorities, who would have liked to officially regularize them, particularly regarding the placement of the book houses, which should not hinder pedestrians or cars.

The boom of the Little Free Libraries

In just 9 years, small neighborhood bookstores have become hugely popular, moving out beyond American borders. Today around the world there are something like 75 thousand. Todd Bol created the nonprofit in 2009 after placing one in his backyard.

“Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that inspires a love of reading, community building and creativity by promoting neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged every year, with ever greater access to texts for readers of all ages and backgrounds ”, reads the official website.

At the end of August, bookstore number 75 was built, located in Jenks, Oklahoma. A very important goal that leaves the dream of 100 thousand bookstores.

“With 75.000 small libraries around the world, we estimate that 54 million books will be shared this year alone. But access to books remains a crucial challenge in so many communities across the country. We believe that everyone has the right to read and we want to help make it a reality, ”says Bol.

To date, libraries have been located in 88 countries around the world.
