A lioness who was rescued from a zoo in Oklahoma in 2018 has now had to undergo an operation to remove her uterus and ovaries. These had become infected due to the inbreeding that she and other lions had been forced into the structure.

Chobe has suffered a lot in the 3 years she was locked up inside the Joe Exotic "Tiger King" private zoo, breeder who is now serving 22 years in prison for a series of crimes related to the mistreatment, killing and illegal trade in tigers and lions.

Fortunately, she was rescued two years ago and now lives at the WildCat Ridge Sanctuary in Oregon. Veterinarians had recently noticed that the cat no longer ate and, after a CT scan, they were able to identify the problem: the lioness had an enlarged uterus due to an infection.

The years of inbreeding in the zoo they have caused the problem left a "genetic mismatch", the same one that gives the lioness a "squat" appearance, according to what veterinarians have made known. It was therefore decided to operate her with a somewhat particular surgery (since it was a lioness and not a domestic cat) in which the uterus and ovaries were removed, performed at the veterinary hospital of Oregon State University.

Fortunately, everything went well and the lioness is now fine and recovering. Incredible photos show the vets engaged in the operation.

Ian Ford, executive assistant of the sanctuary, said he is looking forward to seeing the lioness return to her normalcy:

“Just get her to roll back in the grass with her friend Kariba and lift her paws in the air and just have fun. We hope this intervention will assure you that everything is fine and that you can return to live her life in peace and happiness, which is the only thing we want for all of our residents. "

We really hope that Chobe can now spend her life in peace and health, accompanied by these great doctors who saved her life.
