The Council of the province of Alava has authorized the killing of the only Iberian wolf left in its territory, guilty of damaging the farms

The Council of Álav, a province in the north of Spain, has licensed last Saturday there hunting the only Iberian wolf remained in its territory.

The decision comes only five days after the Basque government's proposal to include the wolf among the endangered species, and was taken to accommodate the request of breeders and farmers who blame the wolf for killing between 150 and 200 animals on their farms, especially sheep.

Now the hunters will have 14 days of time to find and kill the only wolf in the Sierra de Gibijo.

The Ekologistak Martxan association, which has collected more than 100 signatures against the killing of the wolf, he called the decision a "barbarism", a free "attack on biodiversity" since there are no valid reasons for killing the wolf.

According to the association, in fact, it is not possible that a single wolf has caused the death of such a large number of animals and it is very likely that breeders and farmers have not adopted any measures to prevent attacks from the wolf. These measures are mandatory and it would be enough to apply them to avoid any possible irruption of the wolf on the farms.

Ekologistak Martxan announced that he will inform the European Commission denouncing the fact that the wolf's damage is just an excuse to allow it to be killed. The association will also ask for the withdrawal of European funds allocated to the province of Alava as part of the LIFE project for the conservation of endangered species and habitats.

The environmental group declared that, after this decision, the provincial council of Alava "is totally discredited in speaking of environmental protection and biodiversity".
