Stop to blood stained cosmetics! Over 400 Europeans have joined the ICE to ask for an end to animal testing once and for all

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

In 2013, the ban on selling or importing cosmetics tested on animals in all EU countries came into force. A decision that should have led to the definitive end of the cruelties for thousands of rats, rabbits and many others laboratory guinea pigs. But, unfortunately, it did not go that way. The promise was not kept.

Even today, despite the battles of animal welfare organizations and the existence of cruelty-free alternatives, the European authorities continue to de facto accept that the ingredients used in cosmetic products are tested on animals. An inhumane and unacceptable situation that led to the launch of the European Citizens' Initiative (ICE), calling for a (real, not just words) ban on animal testing.

The wishes of citizens and legislators are clear: animals do not have to suffer and die for the sake of cosmetics. We believe that the new safety assessments for cosmetic ingredients imported, manufactured or sold within the EU can only be based on non-animal data. - reads the text of the ICE - As such, the EU test requirements, including the requirements set out in REACH, must not undermine the prohibitions. Instead, a substance-tailored approach should be applied to ensure that consumers, workers and the environment are protected without further testing on animals. It is essential that the European Commission ensure the correct implementation of the bans on animal testing for cosmetics and the marketing of products tested on animals as originally intended and instigate a change in legislation to achieve this target for human health and environmental toxicity endpoints in all. relevant sectors.

The demands of European citizens

A recent survey found that 72% of citizens of EU member states believe that the time has come to phase out animal testing. Almost 400 Europeans have signed up since last June and there is still time to sign up until 31 August. ICE urges the European Commission to take these steps:

  • protect and strengthen the ban on animal testing for cosmetic products: Amend the legislation to protect consumers, workers and the environment so that in no case and for no reason cosmetic ingredients are tested on animals
  • transform the EU chemicals regulation: ensure the protection of human health and the environment without adding new requirements involving animal testing for chemicals
  • modernizing science in the EU: to commit to a legislative proposal that sets out a roadmap for the progressive elimination of animal testing (therefore also that foreseen for drugs, vaccines, etc.) in the EU before the end of the current legislature.

The European Union is now at a crossroads: it can choose whether to continue to accept anachronistic tests and a source of suffering for animals or to start a new era that is truly cruelty-free.
