Leonardo da Vinci never painted the legendary "Battle of Anghiari"

Attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, some scholars put forward a hypothesis: the Battle of Anghiari was never completed.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

It is not his or, indeed, it could never existed. The mystery around the Battle of Anghiari, the mural painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and that it would have been commissioned for the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. It has always been believed that over time that painting had suffered damage, so much so that it was covered several years later by another fresco by Giorgio Vasari. Now, however, some scholars advance a hypothesis: the Battle of Anghiari was never completed.

According to an international team of researchers, in fact, the Genius never painted it on the walls of the Salone dei Cinquecento, nor did Giorgio Vasari later cover it with the Battle of Scannagallo.

The Mona Lisa was never completed by Leonardo da Vinci, that's why

After 6 years of research, the results of which were published in the volume La Sala Grande of Palazzo Vecchio and the Battle of Anghiari by Leonardo da Vinci. From the architectural configuration to the decorative apparatus, scholars have concluded that the works for the realization of the large fresco in Palazzo Vecchio actually stopped before the pictorial phase.

Enough enough for Roberta Barsanti, Ganluca Belli, Emanuela Ferretti and Cecilia Frosinini - who carried out the research published by Olscki and presented at the Uffizi Galleries - to demonstrate that the famous Leonardo battle was never painted.

“The new studies have allowed us to redirect the research. We have gone from the fundamental question 'where is the Battle of Anghiari' to a different question, namely 'was there the Battle of Anghiari?' - explains Francesca Fiorani, professor of modern art history at the University of Virginia. Here, this question can be answered based on a rereading of the known data and on the study of new data: Leonardo never painted the Battle on that wall. The existence of the preparatory cartoons is proven and documented, but that of the painting, which we know only thanks to copies of others received up to now, is not. The materials that were supplied to Leonardo were only functional to the cardboard and to the preparation of the wall on which it should have been made. But the preparation of the wall itself went wrong; and therefore the Battle was never painted ".

    Giorgio Vasari, Battle of Scannagallo

Mistery solved? Probable, even if a doubt remains because of that Search find which can be read on a banner present in Vasari's Battle of Scannagallo. But, the scholars conclude, since the fresco celebrates Cosimo de Medici's victory in Val di Chiana, that motto could only be read as a provocation by the artist towards the opponents who fled from Florence in search of freedom, but suffered again subjected to the power of the same Medici.
