Lambs hit with shovels and sticks and dragged by their paws: the horror inside a Toledo slaughterhouse

The hidden cameras of the Equalia organization show episodes of violence against animals in the Toledo slaughterhouse.

Lambs lifted off their legs and dragged across the floor. Hit, beaten. In the background the screams of the workers who are confused with the lament of the animals. A shocking investigation carried out by the animal rights organization Equalia which undercover entered a slaughterhouse in Toledo.

An unprecedented violence: workers who hit the lambs with shovels or sticks, who throw sand at them, animals being pulled and harassed, kept in a dirty environment and with visible hygienic deficiencies. The video shows how violence is normalized in this slaughterhouse where there is a blatant violation of European laws on animal welfare and food safety.

The cameras also film acts that are dangerous for the health of consumers, such as that of a butcher urinating inside the enclosure where the animals are housed. But not only. Investigators found that food traceability standards are not being met because unidentified lambs are brought into the pen. This, according to Equalia, could pose a risk to public health, as it is essential that animals enter slaughterhouses with identification tags in their ears.

For the animal rights organization, these images are further proof that greater vigilance is needed within the meat industry, one of the darkest sectors in the world. In fact, since 2018, Equalia has been fighting for the "right to information" and for the promotion of a law that requires the installation of video surveillance cameras in all slaughterhouses in Spain. This measure aims to "ensure compliance with animal welfare and food safety standards".

The videos were delivered to the Spanish Agency for Safety, Food and Nutrition (AESAN) which is working on the draft law that intensifies control measures in slaughterhouses and guarantees the welfare of animals.
