The cold season is almost upon us and several animals are preparing to face the winter. Among these, also ladybugs, nice lucky insects that in this period we could find gathered in numerous swarms.

There are about 5.000 species of ladybugs and many - including harlequin ladybugs, an invasive Asian species - they are organizing in view of hibernation. In autumn, the cute ladybugs take advantage of the last days of sunshine to undertake excursions in the warmest regions of Europe at the search for places to overwinter.

They generally prefer to go through their dormant phase in the cracks in the rocks, but it is not rare that they mistake the walls of the houses for natural rocks and that they gather on the walls of the houses, on the railings exposed to the sun but also among the plants in the garden, under the stones or inside the apartments.

Since ladybugs have increased in large numbers this year due to the particularly hot and dry climate, we could therefore find ladybugs alone or in groups as they seek shelter within a crack in the house wall, in a beam or among dry leaves.

Ladybugs are absolutely not dangerous for humans, animals and plants, on the contrary, they are very useful. Therefore, whoever should be lucky enough to meet these precious insects must absolutely not kill them, but give them a hand to face the cold season.

help ladybugs get through the winter, we can leave heaps of dry leaves in the garden, possibly in a sunny and little exposed area, where small insects can find shelter during the cold months.
Alternatively, they can arrange some stones in a sheltered place, for example next to a wall, in the garden or in the courtyard.

It is then possible to place useful little houses for ladybugs on the balcony, veranda, terrace or garden, always choosing a sunny and sheltered area as much as possible.
Ladybug houses have small holes that allow insects to enter but not their predators. They are easily found on the market, and do-it-yourselfers can easily build one with their own hands, using logs and recycled wood.
