Key Energy: here is the list of appliances that consume the most in stand-by

It is now known that household appliances and electronic equipment consume a lot even when they are in stand-by mode. But are there some that consume more than others? Well yes! This is the case of photocopiers, decoders, routers and some televisions, which have won the first places in the black list of devices that consume the most even when they are at rest. This is what emerges from the study presented yesterday by EERG (End-use efficiency group that refers to the Energy Department of the Politecnico di Milano, which carries out research on energy efficiency) at the Rimini fair, on the occasion of Key Energy and Ecomondo 2010.

By now we know, the appliances and Electronic devices they consume a lot even when they are in stand-by mode. But are there some that consume more than others? Well yes! It is the case of copiers, cable boxes, routers and some televisions, which won the first places in the black list of the devices that consume the most even when I'm at rest. This is what emerges from the study presented yesterday by EERG (End-use efficiency group that refers to the Energy Department of the Politecnico di Milano, which carries out research on energy efficiency) at the Rimini fair, on the occasion of Key Energy and Ecomondo 2010.

The analysis - announced yesterday during the conference entitled "Energy consuming products (EuP): research and future development towards efficiency objectives"- took into consideration about 6.000 European products, to verify if the European directive (in force since January 2010) which obliges companies to install a quick start mode, the consumption of which must not exceed the watt, and must remain tra 1 e 2 watts in standby mode. The test results show that the80% of the analyzed products are not in order.

But the "red light" of electronic equipment, the so-called "vampires" loosen their grip and go towards greater energy efficiency even if there is still a lot to work on. In addition to copiers, decoders and routers - among the low-performance household appliances - we also find i televisions, especially the plasma ones, which despite being in compliance with European standards, were in any case energy-intensive as they consume in proportion to their surface; in essence, the larger they are, the more they consume energy. Today in Europe TVs are on average 37 inches, compared to 32 a few years ago.

“The European directive, in force since January, will be more stringent in 2013 and provides for an overall mandatory halving to half a watt for all products in standby mode” - commented Andrea Rossetti of the Politecnico di Milano.

The story of Fabrizio Allavena, manager of Intertek, a British multinational certification company: “In America last March it was discovered that many companies had introduced, thanks to self-certification, many products that had little to do with efficiency and the environment - said Allavena. - To avoid such cases it is active now Energy Star, a sort of hallmark on energy saving “.

The results of the study presented at Key Energy will soon be available on the website www.selina-database.eu, while a reasoned comparison of the products will be available on the website www.eerg.com. Our advice remains to "kill the vampires first" by completely turning off all appliances when not in use.
