Il Kenya has decided to plant 20 million new trees to counteract the. Kenya's forest heritage suffered severe damage from 1970 to 1990, mainly due to the production of wood and charcoal.

Forest destruction is still a very serious problem today. Over 8% of Kenya's 30 square kilometers of tree cover was lost between 2001 and 2014. The government initiative was created to begin restoring the presence of trees, especially in mountain areas.

Trees they will be planted around Mount Kenya and in the highlands, places rich in rivers and fresh water lakes. The campaign to plant new trees is part of a larger strategy for increase forest cover, for the restoration of degraded land and to protect the habitats of many species, where endangered birds and mammals live. Planting new trees also serves to stem climate change.

Local community organizations will commit to planting new trees with the aim of restoring primary forests by inserting native trees. It also aims to improve food security by planting new trees on farms to restore soil fertility, to shade crops and to increase fruit production.

This is a project of vital importance for the people of Kenya, given that the destruction of forests, in combination with climate change, has led to a reduction in rainfall and an increase in soil erosion.

This is probably the reforestation campaign longest and most ambitious ever in Kenya. The International Tree Foundation (ITF), born in the United Kingdom but founded in Kenya in 1920, is contributing to the initiative by providing the population with everything needed to plant new trees. In Kenya the first trees have already been planted. If reforestation is possible, the hope is that such campaigns will also be born elsewhere in the world.
