According to a research in the human jaw there is a new muscle layer never analyzed before and escaped to the anatomists

Uno study confirmed the existence of one muscle layer in the human jaw, which until now has eluded anatomists.

This new muscle is a third section that is deeper than the masseter muscle. It is the most prominent jaw muscle, which can be felt by pressing the hand against the back of the jaw; it is that muscle that moves while chewing. However, until now, attempts to describe it have been contradictory and confusing. Through an extensive analysis it was established that the masseter muscle actually has three distinct sections, and not two.

This deep section of the masseter muscle is clearly distinguishable from the other two layers in terms of course and function. The name Musculus masseter pars coronidea, or Coronoid section of the masseter, was proposed by researchers for the new muscle layer, because it attaches to the muscular (coronoid) process of the lower jaw, the mandibular bone.

The way the muscle fibers are arranged in the Musculus masseter pars coronidea suggests that the newly discovered piece of anatomy plays an important role in keep the lower jaw stable. It sits higher against the jawline and closer to it than the other two layers, and is also smaller in size.

Although this third section has occasionally been discussed previously, the research team has identified it as a separate entity. The goal was to identify the masseter muscle structure comprehensively; to do this, a comprehensive combination of techniques, including detailed dissection and MRI scans, was used for delineate the location and likely function of the muscle layer. In all the cases studied, the coronoid part of the masseter was identified.

Furthermore, although other mammals also have more than two layers in this muscle group, it is unclear whether any is equivalent to the Musculus masseter pars coronidea; this muscle, in fact, seems to be missing in chimpanzees for example, making it possible that it is only a human thing. The discovery means more than just an update of human anatomy, as the identification of this muscle layer could help with all kinds of surgical procedures and therapeutic treatments involving the lower jaw.
