It looks like a Northern Lights: the Irish hills transformed into the largest digital painting in the world

No, it's not a Northern Lights, but the largest digital painting in the world. This is how the artist Kari Kola "painted" the Irish hills

He does not use colors to paint, but uses light. His canvas is not a blank sheet, but the natural environment and in particular the Irish hills. We are talking about the artist Kari Kola che has created an extraordinary work for Galway, European Capital of Culture 2020.

Although the programming of Galway has been suspended due to the coronavirus emergency, Kola has nevertheless made his splendid artistic creation, not surprisingly called "Savage Beauty".

A true work of art that allowed him to coat the Irish hills of Connemara with colors, transforming them into largest digital picture in the world.

To accomplish the work, Kola installed 1.000 slightly pulsating LEDs on a 5km stretch of Lough Na Fooey's shoreline, mixing shades of blue and emerald green. Galway's rugged landscape was thus illuminated to recreate the spectacle of the Northern Lights over the hills of Connemara.

Commissioned as part of the Galway 2020 program of events as the European Capital of Culture, it was to be exhibited and open to the public from 14 to 17 March. This was not the case. Due to the spread of COVID-19, Kola has released a digital version of the work that can be enjoyed without the need to travel to the site.

Below is Kari Kola's footage showing the Irish hills lit up.

Savage Beauty owes its name to Oscar Wilde who described Connemara as a "wild beauty". Kari Kola is not new to this type of work. In fact, you have created over 2000 digital projects in suggestive places such as Stonehenge and during the opening ceremony of the Year of Light in Paris.

A job that lasted over two weeks in really complicated weather conditions.

Here are some of the images published by the artist on his website:

It won't be as beautiful as the Northern Lights, but it has its own charm.
