Despite efforts and improvement, it is waste of food continues to lead the classic over the last 5 years, overcoming water, energy or monetary waste. It is estimated that today more food continues to be produced than what is consumed and experts estimate that in 2030 it will be disposed of 2,1 tons of food.

Not that the current figures are not alarming: every year, 1,3 billion tons of food are thrown into the world, or a third of world production, while almost 800 thousand people suffer from hunger.

In Hamburg, the administration has decided to take concrete action and is working on drafting a bill within the conference of ministers. The document speaks of hefty fines for those who throw leftover food in the bin. And the rule will also apply to large retailers.

Hamburg Senator of Justice, Till Steffen, already has a first draft, while in April the left-wing Bundestag faction called on the federal government to file an impeachment request for the collection of finished food in the trash.

In many European countries, valid measures have already been adopted for large-scale distribution, or agreements with charities that take the unsold. We too can make a difference in our small way, making conscious choices, buying only what we really need and in sufficient quantity, without exaggeration.
