It has resisted for 2500 years, but within a few hours the millenary olive tree of Roviés in Greece was devoured by fires

The devastating fires that broke out on the Greek island of Euboea did not spare the millenary olive tree of Roviés, now reduced to ashes.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

It has stood for 2500 very long years, resisting wars, revolutions and witnessing the birth and fall of numerous civilizations. But it took a few hours to be devoured by the flames and now the very ancient Roviés olive tree there is nothing left, apart from a pile of ash and burnt branches. The olive tree of the Greek island of Euboea, where an apocalypse of fire has been underway for days, has been struck by a bitter fate, not very different from that of the millenary olive tree Sa Tanca Manna, symbol of Cuglieri, destroyed by the devastating fires that broke out in Sardinia in late July.

The Roviés olive tree had even been described in the works of the well-known Greek philosopher and geographer Strabo, born around 60 BC And its gnarled trunk was so large that it took 10 people to be able to embrace its entire circumference. When this monumental tree put its first leaves, the Greeks sank the fleet of Xerxes in Salamis and fought in Plataea against the Persian general Mardonius, while in those years Confucius died in China. And he was about five hundred years old when Augustus founded the Roman Empire almost two thousand when the fall of Constantinople took place.

Symbol of strength and resistance to adversity, the olive tree has witnessed the Persian wars, conflicts of all kinds and world wars. But, due to the arsonists, it was literally incinerated and with it a piece of Greek history was erased.

The island of Euboea, also known as Evia, has been burning for a week now. In recent weeks there have been hundreds of fires that have hit Greece, destroying over 50 thousand hectares of land, but those on the island of Euboea (the second largest in the country after Crete) have proved to be the most difficult to tame, also due to strong gusts of wind. In recent days, about 10 people have been arrested in Greece on suspicion of arson. As happened in Sardinia, also behind this hell, which is sowing death, fear and destruction, there is the hand of man. And summer isn't over yet ...
