A eco cardboard box that saves time in packaging and energy. Two young students from Cooper Union's Albert Nerken School of Engineering, Henry Wang and Chris Curro, invented it (re).
Assuming that the packaging boxes would have an excessive cost, would be difficult to open and would present a bit of difficulty even in the packaging phase, the two guys decided to generate a box that is friendlier to the environment and to man.
And that's where the Rapid Packaging Container.
The costs of a normal cardboard box are - it seems absurd - quite high: 100 billion disposable boxes are produced every year in the States alone. Part of it is recycled, but still 63 billion cardboard boxes continue to be produced annually with freshly felled trees.
With the Rapid Packaging Container, on the other hand, the use of cardboard is reduced by 15-20% compared to that of a normal packing box while maintaining the same load capacity. The two boys have in fact thought of creating the lower part with a single piece of cardboard able to eliminate a lot of waste, unlike normal boxes which are formed by two open ends and a bottom reinforced by double cardboard and consolidated with a tape.
The Rapid box is also designed for be closed in total autonomy, at most with a reinforcement tape in the upper part at the end of the "job" for which it takes a few seconds.
Below is the video, produced in an attempt to find funding for the further development and production of the prototype.
The award. For their idea, last year Curro and Wang won a $ 5 prize at the Invenction Factory, an ongoing summer student competition on potentially patentable projects. Not bad, right?
