Today the world celebrates human and animal rights: a day that reminds us how much the dignity and freedom of all living beings should never be trampled on

Today, 10 December, the human rights since it is the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), but not only: since 1998 this day is also remembered and celebrated animal rights, too often trampled by human selfishness, which exploits creatures for utilitarian purposes, for fun, for economic reasons.

In reality, a real declaration of animal rights already exists (it was filed with Unesco on October 17, 1978): even if it has no legal value, it still provides ethical and moral guidelines regarding the behavior to be followed in the respect for animals. The declaration is structured in fourteen articles which underline how all animals are born equal before life and have the same rights to existence, as well as to respect on the part of man, who has the duty to put his knowledge at the service of animals and to protect them. Furthermore, no animal should be subjected to unjustified cruelty and cruel acts; in case of necessary killing, this must be instantaneous, without pain or distress for the animal. Finally, the declaration establishes the right of every animal to live free in its natural environment, to grow according to the rhythm and conditions of life typical of its species, to reproduce according to the natural cycle.

The other days dedicated to animals

Today is not the only day dedicated to a moment of reflection on the defense of all animals. The 4 October every year, on the occasion of the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi - the patron saint of animals, the World Animal Day is celebrated. 24th April, on the other hand, it is the day dedicated to the animals exploited in the laboratories for tests. Finally, the August 18th stray and homeless animals are celebrated.

What can we do to protect animal rights

Often we do not realize it, but each of our daily actions can make a difference for the protection of the environment and for the protection of animal rights.

  • We renounce forms of entertainment that involve the exploitation and mistreatment of animals, such as circuses or zoos;
  • When choosing cosmetics and body care products, make sure they have not been tested on animals (to make sure, just check for the presence of the special symbol representing a crossed out rabbit);
  • We choose items of clothing that do not have leather, fur or goose down inserts (for example, padded jackets); if possible, we also avoid wool and silk garments;
  • We limit the consumption of meat and products of animal origin or, even, we switch to a completely vegetable diet.

It is the right of every living thing to live freely, and it is our responsibility to allow it. As was rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi: "The more the creature is defenseless, the more she has the right to the protection of man from man's cruelty".
