Indoor plants: why September is the right month to bring them back home and how to plan their gradual return

The time has come to bring our houseplants back into the house after a summer spent outdoors let's see how

One of the saddest moments in the life of any self-respecting planter has come. To bring back the plants that we put outside during the summer into the apartments. We have seen them invigorate and grow. We admired the beautiful blooms and the constant emergence of new leaves. They took full advantage of the intense and diffused light of the external environments, the natural breeze that removed dust and the rain that washed them.

Plan the gradual return home

Night temperatures, especially in the north of the peninsula, are increasingly close to 15 degrees. We keep in mind that the limit temperature for our plants, being all of tropical origin, is 10 degrees. So let's start thinking about how to make the move. Yes, because this operation must also be done keeping in mind some fundamental points for their well-being. (How to turn your black thumb into a green thumb with these three tricks)

The sudden change of light

Like any change, this also causes a little trauma. We should not underestimate the sudden decrease in light. Switching from the open environment to the home one halves the quantity available for the plant. A useful tip may be to make a gradual transition already now that the night temperatures are still acceptable. Therefore, if we have a covered veranda where there is no direct sunlight but a diffused brightness cmq, let's move them there for a first adaptation process. Or we buy a greenhouse with wheels, there are all sizes and for all budgets, it will allow us to leave the plants outside and collect them only in the evening.

Water the plants

Throughout the summer we have watered them abundantly without fear of root rot, indeed satisfying their greater water needs. Now instead that we can no longer enjoy the help of the sun and the heat, we must pay the utmost attention to irrigation. The plant, with less light available, undergoes a slowdown in its functions, therefore it will also need less water.

Dusting is important

Yes, in fact this too is a very underestimated operation. Yet, eliminating impurities from the leaf blades, both above and below, helps it to breathe better and to carry out proper photosynthesis. The cleaner the leaves the better the photosynthesis. But it is not only the cleaning of the leaves that is essential, it is also that of the window panes! Yes, cleaning the glass favors the light radiation in the room. It is about maximizing the amount of light available, especially in the long winter months. In fact, we must know that even a thin layer of dust on the glass is able to shield a lot of it, penalizing the plants.

Fertilization

There are different schools of thought on this issue. What must certainly be kept in mind, to decide how to behave in this regard, is their origin. As already mentioned above, most of them come from tropical areas. In these places, light and climate are almost constant throughout the year so the plant never goes into vegetative rest. While in continental climates it is forced to adapt to changes in temperatures and light. This is what happens in our homes. The plant therefore slows down its vital functions but does not interrupt them, therefore we can help it by halving the doses of fertilizer to be administered.

These are the main but fundamental indications to carry out the return of our houseplants in the house without trauma and guarantee their well-being and health even in winter.
