India will be the first Asian country to ban animal testing of cosmetic products. The Bureau of Indian Standards approved last Saturday the suppression of animal testing from cosmetic standards in the country, also making it mandatory to use modern alternative non-animal tests instead of invasive ones on living beings.

Animal welfare organizations such as Humane Society International (HSI), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and People For Animals (PFA) have welcomed the announcement made by the Drug Controller General of India, Dr. GN Singh. PETA India, which had launched a major campaign calling for a ban on animal testing, publicly thanked Maneka Gandhi, vegan, animal rights activist, four-time Minister and widow of the late Sanjay Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi, for the his support on this issue.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also recently urged Ministries of Family Health and Welfare to consider PETA India's requests for a ban on testing cosmetic products and their ingredients through the Office of the National Advisory Council. According to HSI, the animals used in the experimentation in Indian laboratories include rats, rabbits and hamsters.

During these tests, the chemicals are srub on their skin or inject into their eyes. For mortality tests, huge amounts of chemicals were ingested to determine the dose that causes death. At the end of the test, the animals are killed, usually by asphyxiation, broken necks or beheading. No anesthetic, of course, is expected.

"This is an important victory for so many animals that will no longer be made to suffer, and it is a moment of pride for India as it becomes the first country in Asia with cruelty free cosmetics. We thank the thousands of Indian consumers, politicians and celebrities who have contributed to achieving this historic ban ", he said Alokparna Sengupta, head of HSI India's Cruelty-Free campaign.

GN Singh's announcement comes in the wake of EU and Israeli bans on testing cosmetic products and their ingredients on animals, which include a ban on the sale of cosmetic products tested on animals, regardless of where the test. Israel has also banned animal testing of household products, such as detergents and detergents, and their ingredients, as well as the import of such products if tested on animals. PETA India is now campaigning to end the testing of household products and their ingredients in India as well.
