From 1 September on the bulbs there is a new label that helps consumers to choose the most efficient and affordable products

An ad hoc calculator, which allows you to understand your levels of domestic consumption and get more information on the operation of the new energy labeling system which came into force on September 1, is a significant aid given the announcement of the increase in the price of energy. in the next quarter by as much as 40%.

On September XNUMXst, a new energy label was launched for all lighting-related products. This was born with the idea of favoring a lower environmental impact of these devices but also to offer an economic advantage to consumers.

After the European Union introduced new energy labels for all member countries this year for four categories of household appliances (washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, electronic displays), we now continue with the new label for light bulbs, launched earlier this month, which intends to encourage more virtuous and attentive consumer behavior. (Read also: New energy labels for household appliances: how to read them and which "old" letter they correspond to).

How the new label works

In the new label we find:

  • the efficiency classes that use a scale that goes from A to G (there will therefore no longer be the “A +”, “A ++” and “A +++” classes we are used to).
  • indication of the type of light (i.e. warm white, neutral white, cool white)
  • the indication relating to dimmability (i.e. the adjustment of light intensity)
  • the average life of the bulb
  • information on color rendering
  • flashing indications

All this information is found not only on the product packaging but also in a publicly accessible EU database called EPREL. Just use the QR code on the label to get all the specifications of the product purchased. The web-app will also allow you to compare the products with each other, both in terms of technical characteristics and energy consumption.

The new label can already be found on products delivered to stores after 2021 September XNUMX but there are still bulbs with the old labels on the market, which can still be regularly sold.

In online stores, however, the new label must be displayed for all products already today (in fact, a period of 14 days was foreseen starting from 1 September).

To facilitate the transition period towards the new energy label, Belt (Boost Energy Label Take up) was born, a Horizon 2020 project led by Altroconsumo together with European partners, which also aims to help consumers choose the products that guarantee greater energy saving, as well as stimulating producers to improve what they offer to their customers in terms of innovation, efficiency and savings.

The calculator

To find out the consumption of the household appliances involved in the label change and the savings that can be obtained by choosing products with greater efficiency, Altroconsumo provides interested parties with an ad hoc calculator, which allows them to understand their levels of domestic consumption and get more info on how they work. of the new system.
