In Trieste, San Nicolò arrives on the fire brigade ladder to bring gifts to the little cancer patients of the Burlo

A firefighter disguised as San Nicolò visited the little patients of the Burlo hospital in Trieste, leaving them gifts.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Today at the Encohematology Department of theBurlo Garofolo hospital in Trieste San Nicolò arrived, or rather a firefighter who took the role of the saint who gave hospitalized children a moment of joy and lightheartedness. Well yes, not even the Covid-19 emergency has managed to stop the traditional visit of the Trieste firefighters to the little warriors fighting against cancer.

After climbing up with the help of a ladder truck and passing in front of the ward windows, the policeman disguised as San Nicolò and a colleague left some gifts for the children on the terrace. Subsequently, they went in to greet the little inmates from a distance and leave some other gifts. In Trieste, the tradition of San Nicolò is particularly heartfelt. San Nicolò, in fact, is considered the patron saint of children who await his arrival and his gifts with trepidation every 6 December.

The passage of the fireman disguised as Saint Nicholas through the corridors of the pediatric clinic and surgery brought a breath of joy and hope. Naturally, the two policemen who entered the Burlo hospital in Trieste were subjected to the swab to avoid possible spread of the infection among the young patients and the healthcare staff.

"For several years now - explained the Director General of IRCCS, Stefano Dorbolò - there has been an intense collaboration on safety issues between our Institute and the Fire Brigade for which we are very grateful to the Provincial Command of Trieste and all its staff . A collaboration that aims to ensure maximum safety within the hospital for both patients and operators. It is also a great pleasure for us that the "institutional" collaboration on safety has been joined by this tradition of the visit of the Fire Brigade to San Nicolò which, in respect of a deeply felt holiday in Trieste, brings a very important breath of joy and serenity to all our little patients who often experience long and difficult treatment paths. Thanks to the Fire Brigade who represent the symbol of the noble and authentic courage with which the whole system of forces and actors in charge of the emergency is working together to overcome this difficult moment together ".

Professor Egidio Barbi, director of the Department of Pediatrics of the Burlo, also wanted to thank the fire brigade that every year snatches a smile from many sick children:

“Also this year, in what has now become a great tradition, we sincerely thank the Fire Brigade for what they do for our patients. This type of interruption of a hospital routine, inevitably made up of a component of suffering and even boredom for children and young people, is a real added value, also extended, why not, to the perception of all operators who benefit from a truly unusual break. . All this has all the more value when it comes from professionals whose depth and social role is universally recognized, with an emotional impact that is always special for children. The sensitivity and attention to devote part of one's time to our patients deserve special thanks and applause from the whole Burlo ”.

But this year the commitment of the firefighters in favor of the little patients of the Burlo Garofolo does not end here. In this regard, Lorenzo Pecorella, head of the Disability Aid Project of the Provincial Command of Trieste, announced:

“With this initiative, the Fire Brigade want to be close to all those children who need joy and smiles even from those who, every day, think about their safety. With our colleagues who took part in today's initiative, we decided to soon organize a collection to raise funds for the Burlo ”.
