The choice of the species was made with adaptation criteria relating to humidity and sunlight. The aim of the project was to create a warm, welcoming and beneficial wall for the health of patients and workers from the center by helping to improve the environment and offering them a completely natural work of art.
Ivan Gavino, architect of Urban Therapy, has explained: “For the design of the vertical garden we were inspired by the Brazilian landscape works of Roberto Burle Marx, one of the leading exponents of modern architecture in Brazil, and above all by 'Hanging Garden'”.
The architect explains that the hospital garden was designed for an efficient consumption of resources. In fact, it is irrigated through a closed circuit managed by a remote control that controls humidity, temperature and water, guaranteeing the correct care of the species.
With this new garden, the USP Sacred Heart Clinic initiated environmental innovation in Europe in the hospital sector. "We wanted the building to require the least amount of energy possible and highly efficient structures", they explained Ignacio and José Manuel Peinado Quijano, architects in charge of the project.
In addition to the advantages strictly related to the environment, there are also numerous advantages related to the health of patients admitted to the Clinic. According to the psychologist of the hospital of Seville, Paloma Carrasco Vergara, the benefits associated with the denaturation in healthcare environments they are many. For example, one square meter of green cover generates the oxygen required by a person in a year and eliminates 130 grams of polluting emissions. Furthermore, adds the specialist, "the positive effects on the psychological state of patients and workers will be even more important, we know that environments rich in vegetation reduce the level of stress and anxiety, improving performance and increasing the sense of well-being, also succeeding to stimulate the immune system and reduce physical discomfort indoors by 50%.
