The sumptuous painted lararium of about 4 meters by 5 returned to light during an excavation in the Regio V of Pompeii. The Lares, let us remember, are figures who represent the protective spirits of deceased ancestors and who protect the family.
“A marvelous and enigmatic room that will now have to be studied in depth”, Massimo Osanna, director of the Archaeological Park, explained to Ansa.
The enchanted garden was probably buried two thousand years ago, but who owned this house is still a mystery.
“Who knows if the works in the next few months will not reveal it, when two other rooms that overlooked the garden will be freed from the lapilli. All around Pompeii today is a large construction site to secure the millenary city. The discovery of the house of the enchanted garden is an unexpected treasure that comes from here ”, continues Massimo Osanna.
"Perhaps a rich merchant, certainly a refined and cultured personality", again speculates Osanna. What is certain is that he is of undisputed charm and according to experts one of the most elegant to emerge today.
The extraordinary thing is that it is intact from the blanket of pumice and lapilli, the colors are still distinct and the figures bright, there is even the terracotta arula resting at the foot of the aedicule, with the charred remains of the burnt offerings, a pine cone , two large eggs, figs and dates.
In the meantime, we continue to dig to find the rooms that overlooked that garden, where in the grating of a window full of debris remains the memory of the apocalypse that arrived from Vesuvius.
