While the hole may seem like one of those incomprehensible mysteries, the explanation is there and it's pretty simple. The volcanic landscape of the area gives way to a series of geological features "Eccentric", which are responsible for the phenomenon.
To suck the lake away is a tunnel or lava tube. The latter is formed when the very fluid lava creates a passage. Then there is the cooling and consequently the consolidation of the external portion of the lava flow itself. In this way a solid rock wall is formed which guarantees a high temperature and which makes the lava continue to flow. What remains after the volcanic eruption is therefore this underground tube, a passage that opens towards the surface and leads to the depths of the Earth.
But where does the water go? According to McHugh, it creeps into the subsoil and recharges the aquifer that feeds the sources of the Cascade Range, a mountain system characterized by imposing volcanoes.
