It's completely self-sufficient and off-grid. Defining it "home" is an understatement because the Freedom Cove of a Canadian couple, Wayne Adams and Catherine King, is a real one floating house far from the habits of all of us, similar to the one on the island made with 150 thousand plastic bottles.

Here, in fact, everything is produced, from energy to food, completely detaching itself from the rest of the world: one 100% off-grid solution. Made up of 12 platforms, it has several wooden buildings, a lighthouse and some greenhouses. These spaces are all interconnected through wooden walkways.

Not just home. Located in a sheltered corner on the western edge of Vancouver Island, Freedom Cove is also a self-sufficient floating garden, which produces all the food the family needs.

Wayne and Catherine, along with their two children, have lived there since it was built in 1992. And they have managed to have a full life, without the help of "mainstream" civilization. They grow fruit (even strawberries!) And vegetables all year round and produce electricity through them photovoltaic panels and heating through the solar thermal.

Water is also not a problem since the couple collects rainwater for plants, using a nearby freshwater waterfall for their needs.

Adams and his wife King, a former dancer, said they supported and designed Freedom Cove themselves about 20 years ago. A constantly evolving project. After two decades the couple are very happy in their vibrant ecosystem in the company of deer, otters, wolves and shorebirds.

This complex has been assembled over several years and is a truly amazing place to visit. Everyone here is welcome and encouraged to enjoy their time in this special place. You can reach Freedcom Covecon by using the Tofino Water Taxi to spend time with the couple in their creative home.

Along with numerous sensory stimuli and a truly inspiring vision of a once-in-a-lifetime life, each visitor is invited to take home one of Wayne's hand-carved candles.

Give us a thought if you go to Canada ...
