After working together with theDutch animal protection organization Bont voor Dieren, the shop owners of the Hartenstraat in Amsterdam have in fact decided to ban fur items in their shops. With this move, the very central Hartenstraat has become the first fur-free shopping street in Europe.

“We hope this will bring us closer to the end of the exploitation of animals for fashion,” says Laurens Ivens. And in fact, a good start is half the battle and it is from here that you can (also) start to spread awareness of the extreme suffering of animals in the fur industry and to encourage consumers and businesses to look for fur-free purchases.

Hartenstraat is located between the famous and picturesque "De 9 Straatjes", the "9 Streets" of the popular shopping district in the center of Amsterdam, full of vintage shops, designer shops and specialty shops. The historic district was built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great prosperity due to thriving international trade. The street names of the “De 9 Straatjes”, such as Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat and Berenstraat, testify to the ancient presence of craftsmen who were active here.
Now the road also boasts the title of the first in Europe without fur. A good example to follow!
