If you are taking these high blood pressure medications do not take ibuprofen: newly discovered kidney side effects of the combination

If you are taking these high blood pressure medications do not take ibuprofen: newly discovered kidney side effects of the combination

When taken in combination with ibuprofen, commonly prescribed hypertension medications can be very harmful according to this new study.

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in adults worldwide: for this reason, the prescription of safe and effective antihypertensive therapies is essential to increase the life expectancy of many patients. However, the combination of several drug categories commonly used in the treatment of hypertension and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could have serious consequences for the patient's kidney health.

Be careful, therefore, to take at the same time inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) - such as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACEI) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) - diuretic drugs normally prescribed in case of hypertension and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) - such as ibuprofen, the basis of many preparations.

This triple therapy is known in the scientific community as triple whammy (expression coined a few years ago by a team of Australian researchers who observed for the first time the consequences on human health) and would be associated with a risk of acute renal failure 31% higher than observed in patients treated only with renin-angiotensin inhibitor drugs and diuretics.

Acute renal failure refers to a decline in the kidneys' ability to filter metabolic waste from the blood. This pathology alone absorbs approximately 5% of the hospital budget and 1% of the overall health expenditure; mortality in AKI patients can be up to 50%. This is why it is so important to understand how much and in what ways the interference between different drugs can damage the health of our kidneys.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo recreated, using computer models, the interactions between the three categories of drugs and the impact that these interactions have on kidney health: it was found that, in people with certain clinical profiles, the combination of these drugs can cause acute kidney failure, which in some cases can be permanent.

The authors of the study point out that not all patients who take the three drugs in combination will necessarily develop severe kidney disease, but in any case they urge to pay close attention to what is often ingested lightly.

Too often, in fact, anti-inflammatory drugs based on ibuprofen are taken "lightly" and without supervision - also because they are over-the-counter drugs that can also be purchased without a prescription from the attending physician. If you are already taking high blood pressure medications and need a pain reliever, opt for acetaminophen - the study authors advise.
