On the territory of tremiti Islands il poaching comes in fact "Legalized", despite the fact that hunting on the archipelago has been prohibited since 1995, the year in which, with the establishment of the Gargano Park, the ban on the capture, killing, damage and disturbance of animal species established by art. 11 of the framework law on protected areas, in force on the entire territory of the Gargano National Park, to which the Tremiti islands belong.

In the opinion of WWF Puglia, it cannot be one resolution of the municipal council to allow the establishment of hunting areas in the archipelago. Yet it is about what is happening to the Tremiti. In fact, the municipal assembly unanimously requested theestablishment of two game reserves, which would be allocated to residents.

It has been established that these game reserves should be built on the island of San Domino and on the island of San Nicola. Regarding the relative resolution by the municipal administration of Tremiti, LIPU e YOU GO some have noticed contradictions. On the one hand, in fact, it would be indicated that the hunting areas are intended exclusively for residents, while on the other hand it would be expressed the hope that they could attract numerous winter presences, a statement interpreted as a clear reference to hunting tourism, which therefore would not be reserved for residents only.

Poacher in San Domino - Tremiti Islands

According to what was communicated by LIPU and VAS, la hunting on the Tremiti islands it's been a while now illegally opened, taking the form of poaching. The hunting activity on these islands can only seriously endanger the survival of the numerous species of birds that stop on their territory during the migrations in search of rest and nourishment, but unfortunately encountering a very different welcome.

    - acts of poaching on tremiti Islands, about two months ago, they had been denounced by WWF Puglia with a complaint addressed to Parco del Gargano, the Forestry Corps, the Ministry of the Environment, to the Public Prosecutor of Foggia and to the Puglia Region. Illegal hunting took place at the light of the Sun, without any authority intervening to stop this practice.

WWF Puglia in this regard had not received any signs of hope and now the activists are faced with the proposal, defined as chilling, by the mayor of Tremiti, relating to the opening of two hunting areas on the islands and approved unanimously. The words of Carlo Ferro, President of WWF Puglia, according to which the inhabitants of the Intermediaries should be the first to engage in preserve the territories of the islands for future generations, avoiding depriving them of their biodiversity from the faunal point of view:

“The Tremiti islands are one world heritage owned by all and not only of the Tremitses who, if anything, have an extra duty: to preserve them in order to pass them on intact to future generations. Instead of spending valuable time with inadmissible deliberations, the city administration would do well to deal with more pressing matters and important ones that today negatively affect the tourist appeal of the islands, such as recovery of the enormous historical-architectural heritage falling apart or like the waste management which is totally inadequate, just to give two examples ".

We therefore hope from the institutions, in particular from the Ministry of the Environment, the Gargano Park and the Puglia Region, a first aid to oppose the council resolution that asked for the establishment of the two game reserves. From the State Forestry Corps WWF Puglia hopes for a decided intervention per stop poaching in the archipelago, which also poses a serious threat to those who, unaware of the danger, walk the paths of the islands. In fact, it must be clear to everyone that, according to what was declared by Carlo Fierro, even after the adoption of the resolution, the pursuit of the Tremiti hunting continues to remain a crime.
