Hundreds of ancient trees will be cut down to build luxury apartments in Spain

Bad news from Spain: as many as 20 thousand square meters of pine forest, with hundreds of beautiful trees, are in danger of disappearing due to the construction of luxury apartments

Bad news from Spain: well 20 thousand square meters of pine forest, with hundreds of ancient and beautiful trees, are in danger of disappearing for the construction of a luxury condominium.

Luxury apartments instead of hundreds of trees

The project involves the construction of over 200 luxury apartments, equipped with 300 car parks, which will take the place of a third of one pine forest a few meters from the Atlantic, located between the beaches of La Barrosa and Sancti Petri.

The project is by the architect Carlos Lamela and to announce it is the mayor of city of Chiclana, the socialist José María Román, promising 500 new jobs at the expense of 220 pine trees.

- ecologists they immediately opposed the urbanization project and the environmental group Toniza has already collected more than 35 thousand signatures against the construction of the residential complex and in defense of the green oasis.
According to the ecologists of Chiclana this is a gross speculative operation promoted by Aedas Homes and the construction of the apartments will only damage, destroying one of the most beautiful and singular places in Chiclana.

The city council defends itself by arguing that it is a private plot of land and that the construction request submitted by the owner cannot be denied, as it meets the conditions set out in the General Urban Planning Plan.

The controversy has spread beyond local borders and left-wing leaders such as Teresa Rodriguez, general secretary of Podemos in Andalusia, and Juan Lopez de Uralde, deputy of Equo, have denounced the project, criticizing the construction plan and siding with environmentalists.

The importance of the pine forest

La pineta present on the coast of Chiclana is a small green lung and acts as a containment with respect to the rise in sea level. The trees deliver disaster protection natural events such as hurricanes and tsunamis, events whose damage can be mitigated by the presence of pines and other plants.

The Chiclana city council has promised to plant four trees for each plant cut down but ecologists point out that young trees take time to grow and develop and offer less protection than existing pines.

The pine forest that is intended to be destroyed is one forest present for some time, with ancient specimens and cannot be replaced by young plants neither in terms of efficiency for the production of oxygen nor in terms of protection in case of natural disasters.
