Humpback whales and moms whisper to avoid predators (VIDEO)

Humpback whales and their mothers communicate 'whispering', possibly to avoid attracting predators. They 'speak very softly' so as not to attract orcas, their major predators. To reveal it is a study by a team of scientists.

Humpback whales and their moms communicate 'whispering', probably to avoid attracting predators. Yup 'they speak in a very low voice' not to attract the killer whales, their biggest predators. To reveal it is a study by a team of scientists.

They exchange 'squeaks' that can only be heard when they are next to each other, so humpback whales and mothers protect themselves from the dangers of the sea, according to the study published in Functional Ecology and also taken up by Science.

The team coordinated by Peter Madsen, of the Danish University of Aarhus and the Australian University of Murdoch registered the sound that humpback whales emit in their daily life.

To do this he installed recorders on eight humpback whales and their respective pups in the Exmouth Gulf, off the coast of Western Australia.

“We don't know much about the life stages of the humpback whale, what is certain is that they are migratory animals. When navigating long routes to hunt for food, you need to make sure survival", Explains the lead author of the study, Simone Videsen of Aarhus University in Denmark.

“Migration is very challenging for the puppies they get to deal with too five thousand miles offshore and rough with strong winds. Knowing more about their behaviors helps us preserve the species and help them in a completely natural way ”, he continues.

Cubs have to escape not only from killer whales, but also to males of the same species that could separate them from their mothers. In the Exmouth Gulf, humpback whales spend several months before making the migration to Antarctica or the Arctic, only here it is possible to study and understand their behavior in order to program conservation projects of the species.

Listening to the recordings it emerged that the whispers they are not calls for food, as was previously thought, but it is the way in which the little ones communicate with their mothers while swimming close together. Humpback whales are known for theirs hypnotic songs which are heard even at tens of kilometers, but according to the team between them, 'grunts and squeaks' are transmitted in a low voice.

"IS truly amazing because humpback whales usually make loud sounds, it is the first time that communication signals have been recorded in this way, ”adds Videsen.
