Cabbage and broccoli are finally back in season, good and particularly healthy foods. Today, however, we do not focus on their properties but on the "tricks" to wash them correctly in order to eliminate any worms and parasites that have remained hidden among the vegetables.

Have you noticed how the consistency of broccoli is particularly dense? Especially if we buy them organic or untreated (which we recommend) these could hide inside worms, caterpillars and parasites that attacked the plant and remained there even when it was harvested. Among the most frequent is the cruciferous moth (Plutella xylostella).

Nothing serious or dangerous for our health but certainly unwelcome considering that we then eat vegetables. It is therefore better to wash the broccoli carefully to eliminate the possible presence of "guests", some of which may even be imperceptible to the human eye.

It is not enough to simply rinse the broccoli under running water after having briefly understood it. If you want to be sure to eliminate all traces of worms and parasites you have to do a few more steps (but nothing too demanding).

How to properly wash broccoli

First of all, it is good to buy organic broccoli and learn how to choose them fresh. How? Just look at the color which must be dark green. If, on the other hand, it starts to turn yellow, it means that the broccoli begins to spoil.

Before washing them, the hardest part of the stem must be eliminated, all the rest of the broccoli must instead be divided: cut the stem lengthwise and in the center into smaller pieces so as to form many small "trees", taking care to eliminate any discolored or damaged parts.

Then you have to put everything in a basin filled with 3 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar. Alternatively, you can use a teaspoon of salt for every 2 liters of water.

Let the broccoli rest in the solution for at least 10 minutes but better to get to about 20, then rinse with cold water. If you have it at home, use a soft-bristled brush to clean your broccoli even better under water.
