The various ways to use onion as a natural remedy for coughs and colds
When coughs and colds occur, we must seek a natural remedy as soon as possible to deal with their annoying symptoms. Surely all of you always have an onion at home, so here's how to take advantage of its benefits against coughs, colds and flu.
Onion is a food suitable not only for flavoring our favorite dishes but also with a series of medicinal properties. These make it in effect a natural remedy useful on several occasions.
Onion has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties but above all it is known for its antibacterial and antimicrobial abilities. This bulb therefore prevents the proliferation of microorganisms and at the same time is able to stimulate the immune system. This is why it can be a remedy to keep on hand even in case of cough and cold.
Our grandmothers or great-grandmothers used and passed on various onion-based remedies in the family to treat flu symptoms and in many cases these are still effective today. It doesn't cost much to try, at most you will find the house invaded by the smell of onion!
To prepare this syrup you need 1 onion and some sugar. Peel the onion and then chop it finely, put it in a bowl or glass container and pour 2 or 3 tablespoons of sugar on top. Let it rest for about 12 hours, after which filter the liquid obtained and put it in a glass jar. Take a teaspoon of syrup diluted in half a glass of water 3 times a day until the symptoms have completely disappeared. To enhance the effect you can also add a little honey.
It seems that this remedy has been handed down since the Middle Ages. To prepare it you need not only onions but also ginger, garlic, horseradish, chillies and apple cider vinegar. From the mix of all these ingredients, after filtering it, a liquid called Master Tonic is obtained which can be used to gargle or as a syrup to be taken in the amount of 2 teaspoons once or twice a day.

To calm coughs and colds, you can prepare an onion decoction. The onion, peeled and coarsely chopped, is immersed in water and brought to a boil. It is left on the fire for about 10 minutes and then filtered. You can take it as it is by letting it cool down a little or add a little honey to increase the soothing effect of the hot drink on cough.
Onion on the bedside table
This may seem like a strange remedy but many people who have tried it have been satisfied. To calm coughs and colds, you can cut an onion in half and place it on the bedside table next to the bed where you sleep. It must be left overnight in order to breathe its aroma. In fact, even the scents of the onion would have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial power and could therefore help disinfect the environments by acting among other things as a "magnet" for the bacteria present in the body of the sick person.
Poultice against colds
This grandmother's remedy is particularly useful for decongesting the respiratory tract. Peel, cut an onion and put it to cook over low heat for about 10 minutes so that it flattens and warms up. At this point, wrap it in a cotton cloth, lie down and apply the compress to your chest for about half an hour.
Onion soup can be both a tasty dish and a way to relieve flu symptoms. It is a poor dish that in some cases involves using meat broth (you can very well replace it, however, with vegetable broth). Here you will find many recipes, look for the simplest one and avoid, since you want to use the soup for healing purposes, to add ingredients such as butter and cheese. You can also make your soup more active by adding garlic.
