Radiators yellowed and full of stains that do not go away with a simple swipe of a sponge? Let's see why it happens and how to whiten the elements of our radiators

Why do radiators get stained?

Although radiators are born white, over the years they tend to yellow and lose the uniform color that characterized them at the time of purchase. Why does this happen? There are several causes that contribute to making our radiators dirty and yellowed. Certainly the age of our system greatly affects the whiteness of the radiators: old systems, which have survived many changes of season, tend to have many gray spots and halos. In addition to the passage of time, dust and dirt are added, which often settles between the elements of the radiator and is difficult to remove (HERE you will find some remedies to clean radiators in an excellent way).

If smokers live in the house, the smoke from their cigarettes will increase the yellowing of the radiators (in reality, the smoke tends to yellow and opacify everything in the house, including walls and curtains, as well as causing serious damage to the our health). Even sunlight can lead to the darkening of radiators: if we notice, heaters placed in brighter rooms or that are directly exposed to sunlight tend to stain faster than those found behind doors and curtains or in rooms more in the shade.

How to whiten yellowed radiators

Il bicarbonate Sodium certainly represents the most immediate and effective home remedy to eliminate stains from our radiators, given its strong whitening power. To use it at its best, just create a "paste" by dissolving a few tablespoons of bicarbonate in a little water and massage it with a sponge on the dirty elements of the radiator (to reach the cavities and difficult points we can use an old toothbrush with soft bristles, which we will have dipped in the mixture). After rubbing vigorously - until all stains have disappeared - remove the compound with a damp cloth.

We can also use del Marseille soap (HERE are some tips on how to prepare it at home in a natural way) for a more delicate action: melt a few flakes of soap in a bain-marie and pour it directly on the stain, then rub it with a soft sponge until the dirt is completely removed. Finally, we can use citric acid to completely eliminate halos and yellow spots from the elements of the radiator: after creating a solution of water and citric acid (about a liter of water in which we will have dissolved 150 grams of citric acid in flakes ), pour it into a vaporizer and spray it directly on the stains to be removed, then proceed to rub it with a sponge.

As always, we do not recommend using a mixture of water and vinegar: vinegar, in contact with water, creates a particularly polluting solution that ends up straight in the house drain.
