Through Etsy, the famous online space dedicated to the sale of vintage items and homemade creations, you can buy soy wax candles which they see as their gods base bottle caps of metal, like those typical of liquor bottles.

You can draw inspiration from them to make them with your own hands. It will be sufficient to get some soy wax, recover metal caps and wicks for unwaxed candles, unless you are sure that they have been prepared with vegetable wax, or cotton thread suitable for making wicks. Soy wax is a wax of completely vegetable origin, free from harmful substances or derived from petroleum, obtained from soybean oil. Its utilization for the making of candles and the related combustion is completely safe. Care should be taken when purchasing organic, pure and GMO-free soy wax. Soy wax is sold in blocks or flakes. It is advisable to divide the blocks into flakes with the help of a knife before melting the wax.

How to prepare the wicks

If you have purchased wicks to be waxed, you will have to proceed with their preparation starting by determining their size, which must be about 1-1,5 cm greater than the height of the cap chosen as the base for the candle. Once the candle is ready, the wicks can eventually be shortened with the help of scissors. You will have to proceed by melting the soy wax in a double boiler in a saucepan.

It dissolves rapidly at a temperature usually between 40 and 50 degrees. You will therefore have to dip each wick into melted waxuntil it is completely covered and then placed on a sheet of aluminum foil. The wicks will need to cool before use. To speed up this process, it is advisable to transfer them to the refrigerator.

When the wax has melted, you can add to it 10-20 drops of your essential oil favorite, so that you get an aromatic candle.

By pouring the wax into each candle, make sure that the wick remains upright. Fill each cap just below the rim. The candles will be ready for use when they have cooled down.
