How to make a handbag from an old sweater in 5 steps

Just a little washing mistake, maybe a distraction, and here that sweater you were so fond of, has become just the right size for your old doll. Even if the temptation, seized by an attack of anger, to throw it away is strong, think instead of how many other uses you could make of it.

Just a little washing mistake, maybe a distraction, and that's it sweater you cared about so much, it just got just the right size for your old doll. Even if the temptation, seized by a fit of anger, to throw it away, is strong, think instead of how many other uses you could make of it.

If you have a small dog, for example, you could make a winter dress to keep him warm, or you could create a pillow to make him snuggle. If you want to do something for yourself, you could opt for warm felt boots or original slippers. Alternatively here's an idea for transform the felted sweater (but also an old sweater to be felted) in a pretty boiled wool handbag to show off during cocktails and parties of the cold winter season. Such as the one proposed by Instructable.

What you need

  • 1 felted wool sweater
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 needle
  • wire
  • 1 tape measure (1 ruler)
  • pins
  • handles of an old bag

Optional:

  • 1 sewing machine
  • 1 cut and sew

And now let's take baby steps

Step: Cut

Certainly this step is the most difficult to take for those who have not yet resigned themselves that the sweater they cared about so much is now gone. So take a deep breath and cut at the height of the sleeves.

Step: Sew the bottom

Now that you have obtained two pieces of your sweater, taking the bottom part, that is the sleeveless one, sew the two ends with the sewing machine, with the cutter and sew or simply by hand.

To give more capacity to your handbag, it is possible to fold one of the outer flaps (from the inside) by 90 °, and sew (as shown in the figure). So as to make it slightly wider. Repeat the operation for the other flap as well.

Step: Top edge

You could also leave the upper part simply with an unfinished raw edge, but in case you want to do an ad hoc job, turn the upper part of the bag inside creating a border of about 1cm. Once the top seam is complete, trim the excess fabric.

Step: Bow

To make a nice bow to put on the front of the bag, take the width measurements and using the sleeves, cut the fabric you need, choosing the pattern you like best.

Now sew the end of each piece obtained, and join the two remaining open together. Using another piece of fabric, cut out a flap of the length and width needed to close the bow.

To complete the work, cut out some pieces of fabric that are slightly narrower than the two edges of the bow, and after finishing them with an edge, apply them under the bow itself.

5. Step: Handles

Now it's time to apply the handles.

Cut two pieces of fabric measuring approximately 6,5cmX4cm to attach the handles to the bag. Measure exactly the center and place the first cutout. Insert the handle and sew to hold it in place. The same operation must be repeated for the other side of the bag.

And your beautiful winter bag is ready.

Of course you can customize it to your liking, and maybe instead of the bow add other creations or patches of different patterns and fabrics, pins, rhinestones, sequins, ribbons etc. in short, use your imagination and above all, have fun!
