How to grow organic fruits and vegetables without spending money

Living in a sustainable and economic way, it is possible to start growing some of the food we need by ourselves, perhaps starting from our so-called "waste", from those coming from our garden, to the paper and cardboard that we find ourselves throwing away every day, up to containers of food and water, all to obtain beautiful organic vegetables, herbs, good soil and at the same time reduce our consumption of water and our production of domestic waste.

If in these times of crisis it is necessary manage our economies a little better why not start managing the even a little better our free time and our habits, trying to do something to make us useful and at the same time have fun at home, perhaps avoiding at the same time making some purchases.

By living sustainably and economically it is possible to start grow some of the food we need for ourselves, maybe starting from our so-called "waste", from those coming from our garden, to the paper and cardboard that we find ourselves throwing away every day, to the food containers and water all for get beautiful organic vegetables, herbs, good soil and simultaneously reduce our water consumption and our production of household waste.

But still, by growing our own vegetables, we will also do of healthy exercise without the need to make a membership in some expensive gym and we will also get one beautiful and healthy tan all this by re-appropriating the value of the work of the hands, the value of food and that of the land.

BUT… WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

First, take a leap all'ecological island or take one nice cleaning of your cellara or your attic and most likely you will find everything you need!

Bins, bags, gloves, ropes, fruit crates, twooden tables, rods: if you do not have land, check in your territory if your municipality provides social gardens or of the common gardens maybe together with some GAS in your area or consider theuse of gardening containers, such as the famous "garden-table " proposed by OrtiUrbani, if you only have a roof or balcony.

THEN YOU WILL NEED SEEDS!

Keep the seeds da organic vegetables and fruit or visit the peasant civilization site to exchange seeds with other growers!

Set aside (and set aside!) The PLASTIC BOTTLES or small baskets of cherry tomatoes or strawberries perfect for make mini greenhouses and for some PLANTER just look around the house, checking between baskets and old food containers!

Grass and leaves they are also easy to find in autumn and spring by taking a picnic on a bike or even to the park, for food waste - no meat or fat! - just keep them aside and then turn them into very useful compost with a self-made composter!

Still, like irrigation systems, we use fantasy. For instance, Perforated garden pipes they are perfect ... instead of buying an ad hoc pipe you could take an old pipe and once drilled regularly with holes of different sizes depending on the amount of water that one plant or the other needs, make it pass through the garden as if it were a long snake! Another idea could be this from an old plastic can.

Many BOOKS, as well as many sites and blogs, can help you and most of them can be found in the library, especially on composting and on permaculture.

For the natural insect control we use theneem oil o homemade sprays based on horsetail, nettle, garlic, natural insecticides like those we can find in "The Garden on the Balcony "ed.FAG, however, some suggest letting the insects live happily as suggested by the nature, a very interesting idea that encourages the natural ecosystem in its entirety.

To have some gardening tools then we try to find them second-hand in the flea markets, ask friends who may not use them anymore or let's build them ourselves with a little imagination: straws, bamboo canes, old spoons, chopsticks… These are just some of the enormous possibilities that are presented to us!

Finally, make an llist of all your favorite foods and think about if it is possible to grow them, if they are suitable for your area and if the space you have is sufficient, ask yourself how much sun and water these plants need and what other plants are suitable or good allies to grow together. Talk to other gardeners (it will also be a good way to make friends!) And ask them what kind of problems they have, for example what types of pests they have dealt with most commonly.

Now make some drawings of how you would like to place your plants in your space, always keeping in mind the height and width that the plants will have once they have grown; also remember that some plants need something to grow on or a particular type of soil, a certain amount of light ... in short, plan everything accordingly!

Start by making small sowings in a seedbed always using recycled materials such as egg containers or making small "origami" using newsprint and an empty glass bottle of fruit juice so that once the small plants are large you can place them on the ground easily.

for mulch walnut shells or wood shavings are perfect and goodbye bags of bark and lapilli!

When the seedlings are not too big but strong enough (and you are in new Moon!) it's time to put them in the ground, water them abundantly, proceed with mulching, directly sow the plants that can be sown directly, remembering not to put them too close to each other.

Also at the first difficulty do not be discouraged if something fails try again, in a different point maybe the pH of the soil in that point is not suitable or it could be the light that is not suitable.

In conclusion you will see that when you start ameat what your garden produces you will feel so good that you will wonder why you didn't do it before!

Spread the item and show it to friends and neighbors your successes not forgetting to save your seeds for next year or to give them away or exchange them!

Finally why not try the solar oven and a solar dryer to complete the work !?
