Here are all the tricks to give a pleasant scent to your laundry even in winter

Taking clean towels out of drawers or wardrobes and noticing that they smell bad is a far from pleasant feeling: often a towel that stinks creates a bad smell that spreads throughout the bathroom and that sticks to our hands when we dry them. But why do towels smell bad, even if they have just been washed and not used yet? And most importantly, how can we prevent our laundry from smelling bad?

The bad smell can depend on it the presence of dirt accumulated inside the washing machine: in this case it is advisable to carefully clean the door, the drum, the rubber seals, as well as the drawer designed to contain the detergent (HERE you will find useful tips to better clean every part of the appliance).

More frequently, however, the bad smell of towels depends on the fact that these have not been dried completely and that there is still water between the fibers of the fabric which, by stagnating, gives life to the stench. The problem of bad smell, in fact, recurs more frequently in winter when, due to bad weather and humidity, it is difficult to dry clothes completely and quickly. Even putting them to dry on radiators, a common habit in the cold season, often does not help to eliminate the smell of mold: the heat of the radiators causes the clothes to dry too quickly, but does not eliminate all the humidity present inside them - with the consequence of make the clothes dry, but smelly (HERE you will find some tricks to prevent the clothes dried on the radiators from having a bad smell).

If by now the damage is done and our towels are smelly, there is no alternative but to wash them again, but with some extra attention. First of all, it is better to separate the towels from the rest of the laundry and carry out a dedicated wash with a good spin speed, in order to eliminate most of the water already during the washing. Let's avoid overdoing the detergent hoping to replace the smell of mold with a good smell of fresh laundry: too much detergent risks not being completely disposed of and clinging to the fabrics, making them drier and paradoxically increasing the problem of bad smell.

Instead, we can add a few drops of essential oil of our choice (we recommend that of lavender, with relaxing properties) in the detergent drawer, in the softener compartment. We do not recommend adding white wine vinegar to the wash instead: in combination with water, vinegar generates highly polluting substances that end up directly in the drain.

Once washing is finished, it is important to hang out the towels right away - possibly in the sun or in the wind. Leaving clothes piled up in the washing machine drum will increase the risk of the unpleasant smell of standing water returning. If we are often away from home, we schedule the washing of the towels at a time of day when we are sure we can hang them out immediately - for example on Sunday morning or during the lunch break.

Some useful advice

  • Before storing the towels in the drawer or closet, let's make sure that are completely dry: in this way we will not run the risk of pulling them out smelly and unusable.
  • We do not leave dirty clothes in the laundry basket for too long, especially if they are damp or wet towels: staying in the basket will create the ideal environment for the proliferation of molds and fungi and for the spread of bad smells that will hardly go away with a single wash. If we have damp towels that we can't wash right away, let's spread them out to dry a bit before putting them in the basket: in this way we will not run the risk of a malodorous laundry.
  • Finally, we check the presence of traces of damp in cabinets and drawers, which could be the source of the bad smell in our laundry. Even if there is no humidity, it is better to air the cabinets from time to time by leaving them open for a few hours (even just a couple of times a month). We can also create a natural dehumidifier by placing fine salt or bicarbonate in a bowl that we will place in the closet: the powder will absorb all the humidity that may be present and will save our towels from the smell.
